Wetlands ALive conference
was jointly organized by

Wetland Conservation Centre in Poland

Regional Environmental Centre for Central and Eastern Europe

University of Warsaw - Faculty of Biology


Scope of conference

Recognizing the major role, which wetland ecosystems play in European biodiversity, the organizers attracted attention of the public, decision makers, scientists and students to the current challenges and constraints in the conservation and restoration of these ecosystems in Europe, with special focus on its central part. In particular, there was focused the practitioners’ perspective of LIFE-Nature projects’ managers and assessing the current involvement of public sector, including financial mechanisms, in wetland conservation.

The Wetlands aLive conference was organized as the main part of the Warsaw World Wetlands Day celebrations 2010 and a final conference of a LIFE-Nature project on wetland butterflies conservation. Concluding the project, the organizers invited managers of similar wetland projects in Central Europe to share practical experiences and jointly recognize current challenges for wetland biodiversity.


 The conference outcome
Presentations and discussions on the Wetlands aLive conference constitute the base for Warsaw Wetlands Declaration . The document was prepared and discussed among speakers and participants. As a result of two days exchange of ideas, the Warsaw Wetlands Declaration was adopted.
